How to Justify Your Hiatus

October 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

MotorcyclesHiatus. An interruption in the continuity of a work or project. Or, you could say an interval between two notes or vowels in a word — like in “hiatus”. Isn’t Wikipedia great? As I was working on the website and looked up the word hiatus on Wikipedia, I found this awesome sense of satisfaction as I realized how important an interval is in order to make sense of a word, a tune or a life.

The Romantic Way saw it’s creator on hiatus over the past couple of months. We were in deep decision mode in June attempting to decide if a move cross-country was in order. Instead of the move, we took on a new job calling us to intense focus for at least the next two months. I’m finally in control again and can give some time to growth and development of The Romantic Way. I’m so grateful for the interval, though. In a conversation it’s known as a pregnant pause, in basketball, a fake before a break. A hunter holds his breath before pulling the trigger.

Hiatus — How To Do It

  • Use a week, a month, a year to make a transition in life. You don’t have to quit your job, just take a step back and allow yourself sufficient space in life so you can see where you were and where you’re going clearly.
  • It helps to have someone with whom to share your experiences who can reflect back to you what you’re saying.
  • A hiatus helps remove the elements of obligation and automation from our lives. We can make decisions more related to what we want to do rather than what we should do.
  • A hiatus helps us review or even learn the lessons from where we were.
  • A hiatus gives us a chance to reflect on and respond to the beauty of where we’ve been and appreciate our experiences and relationships.

I’m back for awhile. Till the next hiatus!
